Trailer Repair in Parksville: What Actually Breaks and What We Can Fix

We get this call a lot, and it usually sounds the same.
Somebody's utility trailer is sitting in the driveway with a wheel that won't spin, or the boat trailer lights quit halfway to the launch, or there's a crack in the frame right where the tongue meets the box.
They've phoned three shops already. All three said no.
That's the part people don't expect. Most auto shops won't touch a trailer. It's not that trailers are complicated, because they're the simplest thing on the road. It's that a lot of shops don't have a welder, don't have the space, or just aren't interested in the work.
We are. Trailers, small engines and light equipment are a real part of what we do at the shop, alongside the regular car and truck work. So here's the honest rundown of what actually breaks on a trailer, what you can catch yourself, and what we can fix.
Wheel bearings are what strand people
If a trailer is going to leave you on the shoulder, it's almost always the bearings.
Trailer bearings live a hard life. They sit unused for months, they carry a heavy static load, and on this Island a lot of them get dunked in cold salt water while they're still hot from the highway. That last one is a bearing killer. The hub cools, pulls moisture in past the seal, and the grease turns to grey paste.
The warning signs are worth knowing because they show up before the failure does. After you've been towing for twenty minutes, pull over and put your hand near each hub. Warm is normal. Too hot to touch is not. A hub that's noticeably hotter than the others on the same trailer is telling you something. Same with a rumble or growl that changes when you go around a corner, or any play when you rock the wheel at the top and bottom.
Bearings are cheap. Bearings that seize and weld themselves to the spindle are not, because now you're replacing the spindle too, and that's a welding job. Repacking them on a schedule is one of the best-value things you can do to a trailer.
Tires that look fine and aren't
Trailer tires age out instead of wearing out. A tire with loads of tread on it can still be seven years old, dry-rotted, and one hot afternoon away from coming apart.
Look at the sidewalls for fine cracking, check the pressure cold (trailer tires usually run much higher pressure than your car, and the number is on the trailer's plate, not the tire), and find the date code while you're down there. If the rubber is more than five or six years old, it doesn't matter how good the tread looks.
And check the spare.
Everybody forgets the spare.
Lights and wiring, which is also a legal problem
Trailer wiring is the single most common thing we see, and it's rarely one big failure. It's corroded grounds, a plug full of green crust, wires chafed through where they rub the frame, and bulb sockets that filled with water three winters ago.
This matters beyond convenience. Working tail lights, brake lights and signals are required. If you're pulled over with a dead trailer light bar, that's a ticket, and if somebody rear-ends you at dusk because they never saw a brake light, that gets a lot worse than a ticket.
The good news is that wiring is usually a cheap, fast fix once somebody actually traces it properly instead of throwing a new plug at it and hoping.
Springs, shackles and the stuff underneath
Leaf springs sag and crack. Shackle bolts and bushings wear out and let the axle move around, which is why some trailers start eating tires on one edge for no obvious reason. U-bolts loosen. On older trailers, the spring hangers themselves rust out of the frame, and that's not a bolt-on repair. That's cut the old one off and weld a new one on.
Crawl under yours once a year with a flashlight. You're looking for rust that's gone past surface staining into flaking layers, cracked welds at the joints, and anything that moves when it shouldn't.
Brakes, if it's heavy enough to have them
Bigger trailers have brakes, usually electric drums with a controller in the tow vehicle. When they stop working, most people don't notice right away. They just quietly start doing all the stopping with the truck.
You'll feel it as a longer stopping distance with the trailer on, or the truck nosing down hard while the trailer pushes. Sometimes it's the controller, sometimes it's the same corroded wiring that killed the lights, sometimes the magnets and shoes are just worn out. Coming down a long grade with a loaded trailer and no trailer brakes is a bad way to find out. Same principle as any brake job: the time to look is before the hill, not on it.
The welding side: frames, hitches, racks and repairs
This is where a lot of trailer problems end up, and it's why we can say yes when other shops say no.
Cracked and rusted frames, broken tongues, torn-out spring hangers, snapped ramp hinges, mangled fenders, receiver hitches, tie-down points, gates, decks, headache racks, and one-off brackets for something that doesn't exist off the shelf.
That's all welding and fabrication work, and we do it in house. We work on utility trailers, boat trailers, dump and equipment trailers, and we'll build or modify something if what you need can't be bought.
Same shop, same people. You don't have to tow it somewhere else for the metal work and then bring it back.
Small engines and light equipment too
While we're on it: the mower that won't start, the generator that ran fine last fall, the pressure washer, the pump, the small light equipment that keeps a property or a job site moving. We work on those as well. It's the same diagnostic thinking as anything else, which is to figure out what's actually wrong before replacing parts.

A ten-minute check before you tow
Before you hook up:
Hubs and bearings. Spin each wheel, rock it for play, and check hub temperature after the first twenty minutes of towing.
Tires. Pressure cold to the trailer's spec, sidewalls for cracking, date code, and the spare.
Lights. Have somebody stand behind while you run through brake, signals, running lights and hazards.
Coupler and chains. Latch closes and locks properly, chains crossed and rated, breakaway cable connected if you've got one.
Safety pin and jack. Pin actually in place, jack fully retracted.
Load. Tied down, and weight sitting a bit forward of the axle. A tail-heavy trailer sways, and sway at highway speed is genuinely dangerous.
That's it. Ten minutes, and it catches almost everything that ruins a weekend.
The bottom line
A trailer is simple, which means the problems are almost always cheap and easy right up until they aren't. Bearings, tires, wiring and rust: catch them in the driveway and it's small money.
Catch them on Highway 4 with a boat behind you and it's a flatbed and a wrecked Saturday.
